Pteranodon maiseyi KUVP 27821(Geosternbergia maiseyi according to Miller 1973, Kellner 2010) was derived from a sister to the USNM 12167 specimen and phylogenetically preceded the Pteranodon sternbergi FHSM V339 specimen.

Distinct from the USNM 12167 specimen, the crest of KUVP 27821 was much taller and more erect at right angles to the jawline and more than twice as tall as the orbit above the orbit. Premaxilla did not extend to the orbit. The orbit was 2/3 above the antorbital fenestra. The mandible, what is known of it, is extremely shallow.

Miller (1972) and Kellner (2010) both considered this specimen a distinct genus, Geosternbergia, along with FHSM VP 339 and united by their large erect crests. Here KUVP 27821 is considered just another Pteranodon but distinct enough to deserve a species of its own.
