Pteranodon UUPI R197

Pteranodon sp. UUPI R197 (Wiman 1920) was derived from a sister to Pteranodon FHSM VP2183 and phylogenetically preceded another specimen of Pteranodon longiceps YPM 1177.

Distinct from FHSM VP 2183, the skull of UUPI R197 had a shorter antorbital fenestra. The postorbial process of the jugal was more erect/reclined less. The lateral temporal fenestra was shaped like an inverted teardrop. Beneath the antorbital fenestra the bones were deeper. The mandible was shallower. A single tooth erupted from the tip of the rostrum.

The radius and ulna were expanded distally.

The hind limb was more robust. The metatarsals were shorter and shorter than the digits.
