Pteranodon sternbergi FHSM VP 339 (Harksen 1966; Geosternbergia sternbergia according to Miller 1973, Kellner 2010) was derived from a sister to the KUVP 27821 specimen of Pteranodon and represented the end of this lineage.

Distinct from the USNM 12167 specimen, the crest of Pteranodon sternbergi was greatly enlarged with an expanded anterior portion and elongated posterior portion. The premaxilla was straighter and more sharply angled relative to the rostrum. Other than crest size, there is little to differentieate this specimen form KUVP 27821.

Miller (1972) and Kellner (2010) both considered this specimen a distinct genus, Geosternbergia, along with KUVP 27821 and united by their large erect crests. Here FHSM VP 339 is considered just another Pteranodon but distinct enough to deserve a species of its own.
