Changyuraptor yangi (Han et al. 2014; Early Cretaceous) nests here between Ornitholestes and Microraptor and is midway in size.

Microraptor gui (Xu et al. 2003, IVPP V 13352, Early Cretaceous) is the famous four-winged bird. In the large reptile tree it does not nest with the bird or dromaeosaur lineage, but separately between Compsognathus and Sinornithosaurus in in the Z, Tianyuraptor , Zhenyuanlong and Tyrannosaurus clade. Thus it appears to have converged with birds and that tyrannosaur ancestors had wing feathers.

Microraptor had a relatively short neck, short torso, long tail and long legs. It was smaller than its sister taxa. Long coracoids indicate it could flap, but the feathers seem unlikely to provide sufficient lift for extended flight.

Microraptor gui (Xing et al. 2013; QM V1002 specimen) is not conspecific, but provides a good view of a sister taxon skull. It was preserved with a fish insid (blue).

Microraptor gui (STM5-32 specimen ) includes the lepidosaur, Indrasaurus, inside.
