Tawa hallae (Nesbitt et al. 2009) Late Triassic ~2m in length was a basal theropod dinosaur. Derived from a sister to Herrerasaurus, Tawa was basal to all other theropods, like Coelophysis and Segisaurus.
Distinct from Herrerasaurus the naris is larger and lower. The jugal is deeper. The neck was longer with more cervicals. The torso was shorter. The tail was longer.
The pectoral girdle was more gracile. The fingers increased in length from 1 to 3, which is distinct from most theropods. The pelvis and hind limb were more gracile. The metatarsals were more symmetrical.
As one of the basalmost dinosaurs, Tawa was also closely related to the smaller basal phytodinosaur, Eodromaeus and basamost dinosaur, Buriolestes. See below. |
