Podokesaurus holyokensis (Talbot 1911, Colbert 1964; Early Jurassic) is traditionally considered a small relative of Coelophysis. The original specimen is now lost. Based on Talbot's data, Podokesaurus nests at at the base of the Protoavis clade. This was a small, gracile theropod with diminutive to vestigial forelimbs, robust hindlimbs and a very long slender tail.

Panguraptor lufengensis (You et al. 2014; Early Jurassic; LFGT-0103, estimated 2m in length) was originally considered close to Coelophysis. Here it nests closer to larger, Late Jurassic Zuolong (below) and Late Triassic Protoavis, taxa not mentioned in the original cladogram. Note the short ribs, tiny forelimbs, tall sacral vertebra, subequal metacarpals. Impressions of the premaxilla are present. Note theretroverted pubis convergent with later theropods with this trait, including birds. The forelimb is short. The hind limb is robust. The metatarsus is elongate. If similar to sister Protoavis an elongate coracoid was present and this taxon was an early flapper.

Protoavis texensis (Chatterjee 1991; Norian, Late Triassic, 210 mya) has been an enigma taxon for thirty years. Two completely disarticulated Protoavis skeletons were reconstructed by Chatterjee, who thought he had discovered a Late Triassic bird ancestor with a furculum. Comparisons to Panguraptor document a long list of shared traits, including the odd pelvis with notched acetabulum and retroverted pubes, originally misidentified as a not quite fused furcula. The metatarsus is short. The anterior ilium bends laterally. The torso is relatively long compared to the femur. The ilium is short compared to the tibia. The premaxillary teeth are small relative to the maxillary teeth. The coracoid was long and locked down by convergence with other flapping taxa including birds, microraptorids and pterosaurs.

Zuolong sallleei (Choinere et al. 2010; IVPP V15912; Fig. 1; 3m in length) was originally described as a coelurosaur (related to Ornitholestes) dinosaur from the lower Oxfordian of the Late Jurassic. By contrast, the large reptile tree (LRT, 1209 taxa) nests Zuolong at the base of the rarely included Segisaurus/Marasuchus clade, near the base of the Theropoda between Tawa and Sinocalliopteryx. Apparently taxon exclusion was a problem with the original Zuolong results. Choiniere et al. counted 5 sacrals. The LRT finds only 4 sacrals (Fig. 3) when compared to the ilium, which has a truncated anterior, like that of fellow clade members.

Mirischia asymmetrica (Naish, Martill and Frey 2004; Early Cretaceous; SMNK 2349) was originally aligned with the French Compsognathus (CNJ79), but here nests with Zuolong. Both share an ilium without an anterior process and other traits. This was an late-survivor of a Middle Triassic basalmost theropod radiation.

Segisaurus halli (Camp 1936, Carano et al. 2005, 1m in length, early Jurassic, 183mya) a long-legged theropod insectivore/carnivore derived from a sister to Tawa and was ancestral to Marasuchus and Procompsognathus. Clavicles were found in Segisaurus, which were unknown in other dinosaurs in the 1930s.
