Himantopus mexicanus (Muller 1776) is the extant black-winged stilt. It is a wading bird with extraordinary long, slender legs, and a descendant of Eocypselus, a hummingbird ancestor. Like the hummingbird, the beak is long and gracile. Stilts probe for buried invertebrates in mudflats near water while hummingbirds probe flowers for nectar. |
