Cariama cristatus (Linneaus 1766) is the extant seriema, a grasslands predator from South America. It flies only to escapte predators. Here it is basal to the flamingo, Phoenicopterus.

Phoenicopterus chilensis (Linneaus 1758, Molina 1782) is the extant flamingo, a long-legged filter-feeder with pink plumage. Here it nests with Cariama, the seriema. Other workers prefer (without testing Cariama) the long-necked tinamou, Palaelodus, and grebes, like Aechomophorus, as outgroups. Olson and Feduccia 1980 considered the stilt, Cladorhynchus as an ancestor.

Harrisonavis croizeti (Torres et al. 2015) is an Oligocene flamingo with a less bent beak.

Elornis ( ) is an Eocene flamingo.
