Scandiavis mikkelseni (Bertelli et al. 2013, Early Eocene; 17cm long) was described as a relative to Charadrius, and it is derived from Charadrius in the LRT. Here Scandiavis nests basal to Rallus, the rail and to water birds, from cranes to penguins, ducks to frigate birds. Note the upturned premaxilla not found in related taxa. The caudals are robust.

Charadrius leschenaultii (Lesson 1826) is the greater sand plove/kildeer. This long-legged volant predator nests with cranes and stilts in the LRT. The small size could be a neotonous trait. The lack of a pedal digit 1 indicates this is a derived taxon.

Vanellus miles novaehollandiae (Boddaert 1783; up to 37cm in length) is the extant masked lapwing, aka spur-wing plover, of Australia and New Zealand, notable for transforming manus digit 1 into a formidable spike and those yellow facial wattles. Otherwise it is almost identical to the more plesiomorphic Charadrius.
