Petaurus breviceps (Waterhouse 1839; Early Miocene to present; up to 30cm) is the extant sugar glider, a nocturnal squirrel-like marsupial able to climb trees and glide with furry membranes between the fore and hind limbs. An opposable toe is present on each hind foot. Sharp claws tip every digit. This taxon is an omnivore basal Dactylopsilia.

Dactylopsila trivirgata (Gray 1858) is the extant striped possum, basal to the many marsupials with giant, spike-like procumbent lower incisors. It is an arboreal marsupial the size and proportions of a placental squirrel, but with a prehensile tail. The fourth finger is elongated and used to extract beetles and caterpillars from tree bark. This omnivore also eats leaves, fruit and small vertebrates.l Apatemys has similar teeth.

Yalkaparidon coheni (Archer, Hand and Godthelp 1988; Oligocene; QM-F13008) is a traditional enigma marsupial here nesting basal to Dactylopsila. Workers call it 'Thingodonta' and consider it an diprodontian. Here it is a diprodontian-mimic.
