Solenodon paradoxus (Brandt 1833, extant, 28-32 cm long) is a burrowing, insectivorous sister to the rodents and multituberculates. It was derived from the ancestors to rabbits and tree shrews. Solendon has small eyes. Wikipedia reports, "the origins... remain obscure." Solendon resembles alarge shrew and is closely related to them. They have venomous saliva. The diet consists chiefly of insects, worms and other invertebrates, but they are known to feed on fruits and vegetables. This species includes an antorbital fenestra. |
