Genetta genetta (Cuvier 1816, originally Viverra genetta Linneaus 1758) is the extant common genet, a sister to Prionodon, the linsang.

Civettictis civetta (Schreber 1776; snout rump length = 80cm) is the extant civet. Here it nests between Nandinia and Genetta.

Viverravus minutus (Wortman 1901, genus: Marsh 1872, Eocene) is a smaller, older sister to Civvettictis in the LRT.

Viverra tangalunga (Gray 1832) is the extant Malayan civet. This omnivore is primarily terrestrial.

Mephitis mephitis (Linneaus 1758, up to 55 cm in length) is the extant striped skunk. Here it nests with similar civets, like Vivvera. Skull image from Digimorph.org and used here with permission.

Hesperocyon gregarius (Scott 1890, Wang 1994; Late Eocene to Early Oligocene, 38mya, 80cm in length, USNM 437888) was traditionally considered a basal canid or dog. Here this species nests with mongooses.

Prohesperocyon wilsoni (Wang 1994;Civettictis, Viverravus, Viverra, Hesperocyon and Prohesperocyon Late Eocene, 36 mya) was considered the earliest canid, but here nests with Hesperocyon and Viverra, a civet. Note the long, pointed skull and expanded occipital.
