Serrasalmus rhombeus (Lacepède 1803; 41cm) is the extant redeye piranha, apredatory fish restricted to the Amazon River. Here it nests with Brycon (above). The lacrimal (tan) rims the ventral naris. The premaxilla has tall ascending processes. The quadrate and intertemporal are huge, anchoring huge jaw muscles for the large, sharp teeth. Medial skull openings, present here, are rare on fish. The maxilla has only one vestigial tooth. The torso is reduced in length, but taller. These fish travel in schools. Note the tiny second dorsal fin, indicating a close relationship to Salmo, the salmon. Serrasalmus skeleton images courtesy of ©Steve Huskey and used with permission. |
