Cyprinus carpio (Linneaus 1758, commonly 31cm, max 110cm) is the extant common carp of Europe and Asia. This carp has a cosmopolitan distribution due to humans, who have domesticated them, producing the new genus and species, Carassius auratus, the goldfish. Carp live in fresh water and are omnivorous, often feeding on bottom-dwelling invertebrates. The mouth extends forward to form a tube. |
