Snyderidia, Dicrolene, Acanthemblemaria, Meiacanthus and Anarhicha

Meiacanthus grammistes (originally Blennechis grammistes Cuvier and Valenciennes 1836, Fig 1) is the striped poison-fang blenny. It lives in the warm Western Pacific and grows to 11cm in length. The lower jaw is notable for its large venomous upside-down saber teeth. Here it nests close to Malacanthus.

Acanthemblemaria aceroi (genus: Metzelaar 1919; species: Hastings, Eytan and Summers 2020) is a newly described tube blenny described with a µCT scan skeleton. Note the vestige maxilla (green) detached from the lacrimal (tan). Here it nests derived from Genyonemus.

Anarhichas vomerinus (Linneaus 1758; 1.5m length) is the extant Atlantic wolffish. It nests with the tiny pearlfish in the LRT, another cave dweller. The marginal and vomer teeth are robust. The conjoined temporal fenestra meet dorsally along a thin ridge. Pelvic fins are absent.

Dicrolene nigracaudis (Goode and Bean 1883, Dicrolene introniger shown below) is a rare species of deep sea cusk eel, traditional family Ophidiiformes. Here Dicrolene nests with similar Snyderidia.

Snyderidia canina (Gilbert 1905) is one of the larger pearlfish, some of which live inside of sea cucumbers. Snyderidia is close to the much larger Anarhichas, which also lives in sea caves. Note the tiny caudal fin.
