Pholidophorus sp (not otherwise identified, unpublished, Late Jurassic, Solnhofen) was preserved without so much damage, so was used to identify bones in the unrelated holotype. Here this commercial specimen found online instead nests as a Mesozoic herring close to Clupea. |

Narcetes shonanmaruae (Alcock 1890; Fujiwara et al. 2021; 140cm, typically 75cm)is the extant slickhead, a deep-sea herring related to Clupea. Anal fin entirely behind the dorsal fin, multiserial teeth on jaws, more scale rows than congeners, precaudal vertebrae less than 30, multiserial teeth on jaws and head smaller than those of relatives. Most slickheads are benthopelagic or mesopelagic feeders of gelatinous zooplankton, but behavioural observations and dietary analyses indicate that the new species is piscivorous. |

Clupea (Alosa) finta (Linneaus 1758, Cuvier 1829; 38 cm) is one species of herring, a genus of plankton-feeding oceanic, schooling fish. Clupea nests with deep sea Anoplogaster, not with Engraulis or Chirocentrus traditional members of the Clupeiformes. |
