Dasyuroides byrnei (Spencer 1896; 18cm long with 14cm tail) is the extant kowari, a brush-tailed marsupial rat, native to Australian grasslands. This carnivore-insectivore is considered a member of the Dasyurus clade, but here nests apart from it. Note the early loss of the pedal digit 1 that continues in interatheres and Toxodon. Potorous tridactylus (Kerr 1792; body length: 36cm, tai: 15-24cm) is the extant long-nosed potoroo, a member of the rat-kangaroo family. It hops about and digs for roots and fungi nocturnally.

Pseudocheirus peregrinus (Ogilby 1837; ) is the extant ringtail possum. They have grasping feet and hands (with two thumbs) and a prehensile tail, convergent with arboreal didelphids. Cat-sized Pseudocheirus feeds on leaves.
