Papio sp. (Erxleben 1777, originally Simas hamadryas Linneaus 1758) is the extant baboon. Here this traditional 'Old World monkey' nests closer to long-snouted Notharctus, within the lemur clade, and these are basal to 'Old World' monkeys, hominids, 'New World' monkeys and tarsiers. Compared to Notharctus, the rostrum is longer with larger canines and only three molars. The orbits rotated forward. Fewer than 25 vertebrae are present. The tail is shorter. |
