Pan and Gorilla

Gorilla gorilla (orginally Troglodytes gorilla; Savage 1847; extant) is the gorilla, a larger, more robust sister to the chimpanzee. Note the shorter medial toe.

Pan troglodytes (originally Simia troglodytes; Blumenbach 1775,1776; extant) is the chimpanzee derived from a sister to Proconsul. Distinct from other primates, the chimp and gorilla walk on their knuckles. The cervical neural spines are taller posteriorly. The cranium is not much taller than the brow ridges.
