Notopterus notopterus (Pallas 1769; 60cm) is the extant bronze featherback, a freshwater to brackish commonly considered an osteoglossomorph. Here it nests close to extant Arapaima and Mormyrops. The anal and caudal fin are merged into a long undulating organ, similar to the unrelated electric knifefish of South America. The swim bladder extends throughout the body occasionally including the fins. |
