Ogcocephalus vespertilio (Linneaus 1758; 30cm) is the extant Brazilian batfish or seadevil. Here it nests with frogfish, like Antennarius. Gregory labeled a parietal, but that is the posterior frontal, which also extends anteriorly. No nasals are visible in this diagram. The pelvis is anterior to the pectoral girdle. This nocturnal fish covers itself with sand and preys on seafloor invertebrates. The rostrum can be used as a digging tool. |
