Scheenstia, Semionotus elegans, Martinichthys, Thaiichthys and Lepisosteus

Martinichthys brevis (McClung 1926; Taverne 1999; KUVP 497; Late Cretaceous) is a rare, small, Niobrara fish here nesting with Lepisosteus and Semionotus elegans. Scale bars are cm. Taverne 1999 considered this fish in the same clade as the distinctly different Pentanogmius, a Cretaceous sailfish.

Scheenstia maximus (Wagner 1863; Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous; SMF P.2386; 168cm ) everyone agrees this fish is related to Lepidotes and the extant gar, Lepisosteus, above). Note the splitting of the facial bones into smaller shapes. The pelvic fins (red) are vestiges.

Lepidotes mantelli (Agassiz 1832; Toarcian, Late Jurassic; 30 cm) had batteries of peg-like teeth. Here Lepidotes nests with Scheenstia, among the extinct gars.

Thaiichthys buddhabutrensis (Cavin, Deesri and Suteethorn 2013, Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous) is transitional between Lepidotes and Lepisosteus in the LRT. This fish is notable for its deep torso and low skull.

Lepidosteus tristoechus (Lacepéde 1803) is the extant Cuban gar.

Lepidosteus osseus (also Lepisosteus Lacepéde 1803) is the extant longnose gar. The rostrum is elongated. The mandible is anterior to the orbit. Related to Amia, the bowfn. Ganoid scales cover the body.
