Glossogobius giuris (Hamilton 1822) is the extant tank goby, considered the most primitive of the living gobies. The skull is wider than deep. The quadrate is perforated as in Periophthalmus, the mud skipper (below).

Periophthalmus sp. (Bloch and Scheider 1801) is the extant mudskipper, a goby often seen sunning itself above the surface of the water. The pelvic fins help grip the undersurface. Underwater, mudskippers stay close to the bottom. Mudskippers are most closely relqated to frogfish among tested taxa.

Gobiesox cephalus (Lacépéde 1800, up to 15cm) is a genus of clingfish (Gobiesocidae). The pelvic fins are modifed to create a semi-circle to match an opposing semi-circle from adjacent tissue (the anal region) and thus create a suction disc to cling to seaweed and rocks. Here Gobiesox nests with other clinging gobies like Periophthalmus. Note the appearance of large chin teeth on the underside of the mandible. The premaxilla extends halfway over the frontals.

Elacatinus oceanops (Jordan 1904; 5cm) is the extant neon goby from Bahamas coral, common in the aquariaum trade. It nests here with the mudskipper and other gobies.
