Numidotherium savagei (Jaeger in Mahboubi et al 1986, middle Eocene, 46mya, 1m tall at shoulder, 37cm skull length) is known from an almost complete skeleton. It was more slender and plantigrade than later elephants. It grazed freshwater vegetation in a swamp orw
riverine environment. This taxon links Moeritherium and the sirenians (manatees) with Palaeomastodon and the elephants. |
