Coilia nasus (Gray 1830; up to 41cm) is the Japanese grenadier anchovy, commonly found at 50m depths, but migrates to freshwate to spawn. Others live in freshwater lakes continually. Traditionally considered a relative of Clupea, the herring, in the LRT it nests more parsimoniously on the other branch of bony fish. Note the insanely long maxilla extending beyond the back of the skull an equal distance. The incurrent nares appear to open ventrally, below the nasals. Compare to Engraulis, the anchovy, above. |
