Leptolepis sprattiformis (Agassiz 1843, Middle Triassic to Early Cretaceous; 6cm in length) is traditionally considered the first true bony fish. Here in the LRT, others precede it. The rostrum is short, the eyes are large and the overall size is tiny, indicating neotony and paedomorphosis. The scales lacked ganoid. Mass graves indicate they schooled. Here Leptolepis nests with Archaeomene. |
