Baryonyx walkeri (Charig and Milner 1986, Early Cretaceous) is a large, basal spinosaurid with longer legs and no sign of a spine above the hips. Two skull reconstructions are offered here.

Suchomimus tenerensis (Sereno et al. 1998, Aptian, Early Cretaceous, 115 mya, 11m, single partial skeleton) is derived from a sister to Sinocalliopteryx. Suchomimus had a longer, crested snout and was overall much larger with taller dorsal and caudal neural spines. Note the displaced naris ventral rim formed from equal parts premaxilla and nasal along with the kinked snout and relatively small angled orbit. This dinosaur was a likely fish eater, but had a terrestrial morphology with long hind limbs and a short sail not deeper than the rest of its torso.

Spinosaurus aegyptiacus (Stromer 1915, Ibrahim et al. 2014, Cenomian, Late Cretaceous, 95 mya earliest; 15 m est) is one of the largest theropod dinosaurs, but had relatively short hind limbs. This aquatic predator had a dorsal sail taller than the rest of its torso. It was derived from a sister to Suchomimus and had a similar long-snouted skull. The naris was infilled by the maxilla. The sail could have been used for thermoregulation and for directional control in fast moving rivers, a preferred habitat filled with food in an otherwise barren desert landscape.

Irritator challengeri (Martill et al 1996, Schade et al 2023, Early Cretaceous, Brazil) preserves more skull than any spinosaurid.
