Cabonnichthys burnsi (Ahlberg and Johanson 1997; Late Devonian) was originally considered a mid-sized lobe-fin fish. Here it nests at the base of the clade of lobe-fin fish that includes Osteolepis, Eusthenopteron (below) and most bony ray-fin fish. It also nests at the base of the stem tetrapods, including Tinirau, Panderichthys and Tiktaalik. So Cabonnichthys is close to the lineage of human ancestors.
Note the palatal fangs, larger than the marginal teeth and the straight tail with symmetrical caudal fins. Importantly, the pre-sacral length is elongate. The post-sacral length is short. The lobe-fins are small. |
