Fugusuchus hejiapensis (Cheng 1980; Early Triassic ~250 mya) represents a large taxon in a sister clade to the Erythrosuchia, both derived from a sister to Euparkeria. Revueltosaurus and Tasmaniosaurus are sister taxa. The variety of taxa in this
small clade hints at a wider variety of transitional taxa. Note the smaller orbit, the larger lateral temporal fenestra and dipping jugal. The premaxilla is ventral to the maxilla according to phylogenetic bracketing. Where is the naris? Comparisons to sister taxa suggest an anterior position low on the premaxilla.
Here a few bones are shifted to their invivo positions from the original Parrish 1992 drawing. A complete tree is here. |
