Plesiochelys etalloni (Rütimeyer 1873; Gaffney 1975; Late Jurassic) nests at the base of the giant terrestrial turtles in the LRT. Considered a basal cryptodire, this was one of the first turtles to attempt to hide the skull beneath the shell. Derived from an ancient sister to the snapping turtle, Macrochelys.

Chelonoidis niger (Quoy and Gaimard 1824; 138cm long male, 88cm long female) is the extant Galápagos tortoise, nesting between the snapping turtle and the Aldabara giant tortoise in the LRT.

Aldabrachelys gigantea (Schweigger 1812; 122cm carapace length) is the Aldabra giant tortoise. Here it nests basal to Macrochelys and Archelon (below). Preceding Late Cretaceous Archelon, this tortoise from the Seychelles and its close relative on Madagascar were endemic Gondwana survivors of the K-T extinction event on the other side of the world.
