Tamandua tetradactyla (Rafinesque 1815; extant) is the Southern Tamandua a type of anteater. Derived from an as yet undiscovered unarmored sister to Dasypus, the several anteater species elongate the rostru and lose all teeth. Myrmecophaga walks on three knuckles to keep its claws long and sharp. Tamandua walks on its wrists.
Arboreal Tamandua has a prehensile tail that is dragged on the ground.
Myrmecophaga tridactyla (Linneaus 1758) is the extant giant anteater, a larger terrestrial sister. Anteaters are members of the clade Vermilingua, named for their 'worm tongue'. Wikipedia reports that anteaters are more closely related to sloths, but the large reptile tree does not confirm this. Rather armadillos and aardvarks, both with a similar long snout, are closer in the LRT. Pangolins, like Manis, are even more closely related. |
