Platypterygius australis (McCoy 1867, originally Ichthyosaurus australis; earliest Late Cretaceous, Cenomian, 7m in length) is the last surviving ichthyosaur. More digits and phalanges appear in the fore flipper. They are tightly bound in interlocking rows and columns producing a flat appearance. The lateral temporal embayment is filled. The external naris is largely roofed over. The skull was flat on top.

Temnodontosaurus platyodon (Lydekker 1889; BMNH 2149; Early Jurassic, 9-12m estimated length) was one of the largest ichthyosaurs. Here it nests with 10x smaller Platypterygius. The eyes are 20cm in diameter in the largest specimens.
