Chiasmodon niger (Johnson 1864, up to 25cm) is the extant black swallower, a deep sea lizardfish capable of swallowing, but not necessarily digesting before decomposition, prey larger than itself. Scales are absent.
Trachinocephalus myops (originally Salmo myops and Saurus myops Forster 1801; 40 cm) is the extant blunt-nosed lizardfish. Here this ocean-going genus prefering shorelines nests with Lepidogalaxias and several deep-sea fish.
Aulopus filamentosus (Bloch 1792) is the extant royal flagfin, a founding member of the Aulopidae and Aulopiformes, a clade said to resemble lizardfish. Here this bottom dweller (deepr than 1000m) nests with Synodus.
