Mormyrops and Gymnarchus

Gymnarchus niloticus (Cuvier 1829; 1.6m overall length) is the African knifefish or aba aba. This sister to Mormyrops ahs not caudal, pelvic or anal fins. The dorsal fin is the propulsive fin. The electric fish produces a weak electric field in order find prey. Sperm cells lack a flagellum so move like an amoeba.

Mormyrops deliciosus (Leach 1818, Müller 1843; originally Mormyrops anguilloides Linneaus 1758; up to 1.5m in length) is the extant Cornishjack, a weakly electric river fish from Sub-Saharan Africa. The maxilla lacks teeth. The skull is extended due to an enlarged braincase. The teeth are robust and straight as in the ancestral taxon, Amia.
