Pterodactylus antiquus? AMNH 1942 (Abel 1925, No. 20 in the Wellnhofer 1970 catalog) was originally considered a small specimen of Pterodactylus antiquus. Here No. 20 was derived from a sister to Ningchengopterus and phylogenetically preceded the Vienna specimen of Pterodactylus.
Distinct from Ningchengopterus, the skull of No. 20 was even longer in the rostrum with larger teeth. The postorbital region, including the temporal fenestrae was smaller.
The cervicals were longer and more robust. The first three dorsal ribs were more robust than the rest. The tail was reduced.
The scapula was slightly longer. The humerus was smaller with a deltopectoral crest that was angled proximally. Fingers I-III were more disparate in length.
The pelvis was more gracile. The prepubis was deeper. Distinct from No. 31, the metatarsals were longer, digit I was longer, and digits II and V were shorter.
