Azendohsaurus laaroussi (Dutuit 1972, A. madagaskarensis Flynn et al., 2010) middle Carnian, Late Triassic ~220 mya, was originally regarded as an early dinosaur, a prosauropod, but a new specimen described by Flynn et al. (2010) was considered an early archosauromorph with features associated with herbivory, including tooth denticles, expanded tooth crowns, a downturned dentary and the articular located at the ventral margin of the mandible. Nesbitt et al. 2015 nested Azendohsaurus between Trilophosaurus and Pamelaria within the Protorosauria/Archosauromorpha.

Here Azendohsaurus nested with the rhynchocephalian lepidosaur,Trilophosaurus with which it shares a a short rostrum and a toothy palate. Ancestral sister taxa include Sapheosaurus and Noteosuchus. These taxa all share a palatine with large crushing teeth, distinc from Pamelaria.

What prior workers considered a large premaxilla actually has a bit a maxilla on it, reducing the tooth count to two. A sclerotic ring is preserved. The teeth on Azendhosaurus are larger than any other from this clade, which makes it appear to be distinct from other rhynchocephalians.

Shringasaurus indicus (Sengupta et al. 2017; Middle Triassic; 3-4m in length) is distinguished by its great size and its dimorphic frontal horns. Otherwise it shares a long list of traits with Azendohsaurus.
