Acanthostega gunnari (Jarvik 1952; Clack 2006; Famennian, Late Devonian, 365mya; 60cm in length;) was an early tetrapod documenting the transition from fins to fingers and toes. This taxon is derived from a sister to Tiktaalik and is basal to temnospondyls like Eryops and basal to all other tetrapods, including Ichthyostega.
Another species or gender (below) has a distinctly upturned mandible and snout, like a spawning phase sockeye salmon. |
