Paleorhinus and Rutiodon

Paleorhinus fraasi (Williston 1904) Late Triassic, ~210mya, 2.5 m. long, was among the most primitive of the parasuchians (phytosaurs) and a sister to Parasuchus. It was derived from a sister to Proterochampsa and Youngoides RC91.

Distinct from Parasuchus, the mandible was not so deep in Paleorhinus.

The cervical neural spines were taller. The tail did not have such elevated neural spines.

The scapula was relatively larger.
