Joermungandr bolti (Mann, Calthrope and Maddin 2021; Late Carboniferous, 309mya) is a tiny elongate microsaur close to Kirktonecta. Dermal scales covered the tiny limbed body of this burrowing taxon.

Kirktonecta milnerae (Clack 2011; UMZC 2002; Late Viséan, Carboniferous, 330 mya) is considered the earliest microsaur in the fossil record. Here it nests between Micromelerpeton and Adelospondylus and the base of the microsaurs and caecilians.

Clack reported, "deep tail, comprised of long, posteriorly directed, round-ended haemal spines in contact along their anterior and posterior margins distally, combined with low rounded neural spines; large pes, with tarsus breadth equivalent to the length of 3.5 or 4 presacral vertebrae. All known tetrapod groups except microsaurs can be ruled out on the basis of vertebral construction or proportions."

Asaphestera platyris (Steen 1934; Mann et al. 2020; Westphalian, Middle Pennsylvanian) was described as the earliest known amniote and synapsid. It is neither.
