A selection of basal archosaur and popsaurid pedes. Calcaneum in blue. Decuriasuchus demonstrates the basal rauisuchid-type calcaneal tuber. That is very much reduced in the basal archosaurs (crocs: Gracilisuchus, Terrestrisuchus; dinos: Herrerasaurus, Silesaurus). The calcaneal tuber enlarges once again (by convergence) in Protosuchus and Alligator on one branch, and in Lotosaurus, Poposaurus, on another branch. And a third time, (again by convergence) in Effigia and Shuvosaurus on another branch. Note the distinctive patterns of calcaneal tuber development in all three clades. |
